Made up of discus-throwing, the long jump, javelin-throwing, running (probably the stadion) and wrestling. All the events took place in one afternoon (sounds exhausting if you ask me). Pentathletes had the perfect bodies, but that was the only thing the people were interested in. The athletes competed in so many activities and won less money. In the Pentathlon the winner and order of events was extremely debated. Wrestling was always the last event. They debated the first event which was most likely discus-throwing, the long jump or javelin-throwing, which were found in the pentathlon. Running most definetley the fourth event. No text showed how the winner was decided but what we do know is that the competitor had to win three events.....Just none of this can be proved! Pew Pew!! I knocked you out! - Adonis While I am not known for my boxing it was one of the biggest sports at the Olympics! While super fun it was considered one of the most [[Dangerous]]but also one of the [[Oldest]]sports! Did you know Wrestling is the oldest form of fighting without weapons? Welcome EDU 3610 into fun facts about Ancient Wrestling. Did you know that there were two different types? Take a tour through [[Upright]] and [[Ground]] wrestling to learn more about it! While wrestling was a fun sport that was a good aggressive reliever for men there were many rules! - The wrestlers were not allowed to hit one another - No biting or holding of any organs - They had to wrestle in the sandpit - They also slathered their bodies in olive oil but then sprinkled dirt/dust on themselves to give the opponents gripWhile I am no wrestling expert as it was not my preferred Olympic sport, Upright wrestling was very popular! As some of my colleagues will show you in the carving below to win in upright wrestling you had to make the opponent fall three times. Any part of the body had to touch the ground for the part to count as out! This form of wrestling joined the Olympics in 708BC I'm gonna bring you to the ground! - Adonis Another form of wrestling in Ancient Greek sport was ground wrestling. In ground wrestling the entire body was able to touch the ground, the wrestler only won if the opponent gave up and pointed their index fingure to the person watching the match. In ground wrestling they also wrestled in sand except this time it was wet. Ground wrestling never actually made it to the Olympics! Boxing was a dangerous sport then too! Boxers would bound their hands in leather around their knuckles and then they were padded with wool inside. They also had hard straps on their hands to ensure they were hitting their opponents officially. These gloves were harsh so we used softer gloves in training. In our boxing no one could hold the opponent! THIS IS NOT WRESTLING PEOPLE! You were only allowed to hit ur opponent. Like in present day boxing, boxers had a lot of injuries and was considered very dangerous. The boxing dates from the Minoan and Mycenian period. In 688 BC it became an official Olympic sport and eventually in 616 BC boys were able to pariticipate. The match only ended after a fighter submitted, the boxers fought based on age and not weight. Now we have arrived at my favourite sport, Chariot Races! Considered the most prestigious event with the hottest people (for example... me). Only the rich and powerful could compete because horses were expennsive. The jockeys were hired by the rich similar to present day and ride for them. There were multiple [[Events]] for horse racing! In the horse races there were different events: *the four-horse chariot *the two-horse chariot *the horse with rider. The racing took place in the hippodrome. It was very wide and two turning points that were built on each end. There were many dangerous points due to everyone wanting to turn on the inner side. The stadium did not have seats for spectators and they had to watch around on the fields. Our neiboughrs the Romans stole our thunder though! Greek chariot races lost their popularity due to the Roman horse races. The Romans also pushed international racing around the Mediterranean. Running is considered one of the oldest and important sports in Olympic Sport. 776 BC to 728 BC there was only one event the 180m sprint. When one won the race the winner would give their name to the olympiad in which he won. Eventually other running events were added to the Olympics! *The Dialos, *This is twice the distance of the stadion, *The race in armour *The dolichos, a long-distance race. * In the Isthmian, Nemean and Panathenaic games, there was also the hippios, a distance of four stadia. Fun fact did you know: The torch-race and the marathon were not Olympic sports. Greek athletes, like the athletes you see today on your TV's often specialized in one sport! [[Info]]While today you see some swanky outfits on runners on the track....in Ancient Greece like most of the other athletes the runners were nude and barefoot! Also rather than a track they ran on sand with no permanent lines until the fifth century BC and onwards! EDUC 3610 welcome to the present leave the magic horse and buggy behind and let's get boxing! Rules vary according to styles, and they could be as different to each other, as Shotokan Karate to Kyokushin. We could describe Greek wrestling as a mix of submission wrestling, beach wrestling and other modern styles. Firstly, to win a match, one must earn three points which could be won by submission holds, the opponent’s back touching the ground or being pushed out of the playing ground.Drop that chariot in parking because you will not need it in this modern day pentathlon. When modern chariot racing you want two horses that similarly built in height and weight. As they will have better gallop. Typically the chariot racing now runs from December through March. The modern Olympics features five long distance running events for both men and women: 800-meter run 1500-meter run 5000-meter run 10,000-meter run Marathon Your running seems a lot more boring than ours! Players meet on a mat and they use their arms and legs to take down their opponent and you are allowed to hold below the belt! You could throw, take-down and slammed and you win when the opponent is pinned. In Greco-Roman wrestling now you are not able to use the legs. You were not able to use the legs to fall or hold below the waist. Otherwise you guys keep it simple and and do not change the rules much! This style of wrestling began in France in the 19th century, they imitated the classical Greek and Roman representations of the sport. It got popular in Scandinavia and they won many Olympic titles in 1912 to 1948. In Pankration now it is a mix of wrestling and judo in taking down the opponent, jiu-jitsu and grappling style holds and mixing in karate and Muay Thai punches and kicks directed to the body. At competition there are three styles- Pankration Submission, Pankration A class (without striking on the head) and Pankration B (with striking on the head). In Submission wrestling (which to be honest I have never heard of) was when opponents would lose to falling. The opponent would fall when they were placed in a wrestling hold. The referee would take charge and ask if the opponent wanted to submit. Beach wrestling is literally when you guys wrestle on the beach. While we used to wrestle in sand you guys just do it on the beach! It is crazy you get so dirty! 1. The naked truth Ancient Olympians competed nude. In fact, “gymnasium” in Greek broken down means “naked” and “place.” Now thank goodness athleted compete in clothing 2. Beyond physical training Athletes worked on their minds just as much as their bodies. Exercising the mind was important to ensuring success in Ancient Greece Today athletes work on their mental health just as much too! 3. No holds barred Today you guys have so many rules. In my time when we boxed in the style of pankration (pronounced “pan-KRAH-tee-own”) combined wrestling and boxing, you could bite and eye-gouging. 4. A religious experience In my time we focused our Olympics on honouring our great God Zeus. Today you guys compete for success and money. 5. No girls allowed Back in my time it was only us stallions that could compete in the Olympics. Now both genders were able to compete and thank goodness for that. It is much better with everyone competing. The pentathlon changed in 1912 and began to consist of 200 meters race, long jump, 1500 meters race, discus throw, and javelin throw. The model changed and was changed by Pierre de Coubertin and it is considered the modern-day pentathlon. Pierre de Coubertin suggested a new pentathlon should include fencing, shooting, swimming, cross-country running, and show jumping. The competitor would gain points for each event and then when adding the points whoever had the most would win. In the year 2000 women competed for the first time in this event at the Olympics. Now that our exciting time learning about Sports is over I must leave you and take my chariot home! I hope to see you in the future on another adventure of Ancient Greece and the modern world! See you next time! Adonis
